When I was a young man Bruce Catton’s books were seen as the gold standard on the subject of the Civil War. All these years later I think they continue to hold up very well.Catton pioneered the use of letters and diaries written by eyewitnesses to help tell the story, adding a powerful element of human interest. It seems to me this books are especially valuable now, in light of all the newly discovered rancor about the war and its causes. Catton’s book offer an element of careful thought and subtlety profoundly absent from today’s rhetoric about the war.If time permits, reading the books in sequence is desirable but not absolutely necessary. This one tells an excellent story.Highly recommended. In this story of the final period of the war, we have passages graced by such lyrical quality it approaches poetic mastery. The author brings us ever so gradually to the conclusion of the Civil War. We move from the carnage of the Wilderness Campaign to the Bloody Angle assault to the battle for Petersburg and Richmond. This story envelops the reader with the overall sense of the brutality of the American Civil war.
